Dear City of St. Charles School District Parents/Guardians:

As we begin the 2013-2014 school year, Chartwells School Dining Services is pleased to introduce our new Environments Simply Good program, a year-long schedule of special events that are intended to encourage students to select complete, well-balanced meals. The Environments Simply Good program continues to have a culinary emphasis that focuses on healthier meal options, especially ones with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

This year's annual Simply Good theme consists of five main promotions, with many individual promotional evens and activities included in each, to build excitement in the cafeteria for elementary, middle, and high school students throughout the school year. These exciting promotions aim to improve school meal participation and educate elementary, middle and high school students about the importance of eating healthful and balanced meals.

There five promotions planned for this school year are:

  • Hometown Specialty (September/October)
  • Around the World in 60 Days (November/December)
  • Cafe to Community (January/February)
  • Breakfast is for Everyone (March)
  • Be a Locavore (April/May)

We hope that you will support You are Simply Good and our efforts to create fun and inviting dining environments within your students' schools. Please follow our events on Facebook and Twitter throughout the year, and help us encourage mealtime participation. if you would like to learn more about Chartwells Food Service, please visit

Meal Price Increase for 2013-2014

These new school meal requirements incorporate many changes which will directly impact our school meal prices. We have seen a dramatic rise in food prices, and will continue to do so over the next several years due to increasing transportation costs and the continued rollout of the new meal legislative requirements. Meal prices are determined by the City of St. Charles School District leadership. Milk is 50 cents.

2013-2014 School Year Full Meal Prices:

  • $1.50 Elementary Breakfast
  • $2.25/$2.50 Elementary Lunch
  • $1.50 Secondary Breakfast
  • $2.35/$2.60 Secondary Lunch
  • $1.50 High School Breakfast
  • $2.35/$2.60 High School Lunch

We have a wonderful computerized debit system. This system allows you to pay in advance for meals and ala carte foods (milk, juice, chips etc.). All students and adults are required to enter their PIN number regardless of meal status or payment method, thus insuring everyone's privacy. Although we recommend that all students and adults prepay money on their account for speed of service, students and adults will still be able to pay cash on a daily basis as they have in the past. The system works with a twelve key PIN pad (located near the end of the serving line). It will allow your child to enter their 4 or 5 digit PIN to access their account. Please help your child memorize their number. The PIN will stay the same throughout the remaining years your child is enrolled at The City of St. Charles School District regardless of the school the child is attending. Kindergarten PIN numbers will be available when school starts. A list of student names and PIN numbers along with account balances will be available at the orientations held at each school for all students in K-12th grades. To prevent fraudulent use of student accounts, we have a picture of each student currently in the system. As new students enroll and have pictures taken, the database will be updated.

Money will be deducted from an account when the student/adult uses the account to purchase meals and/or ala carte items. The system will know the meal status of your child (Paid, Reduced or Free) and will deduct the correct amount from the account. There is no limit to the amount of money that can be deposited into the account. Low balance letters and negative balance letters will be sent home to elementary students only.

The charge policy is as follows: Up to 3 breakfast and 3 lunch charges for elementary students; 1 breakfast and 1 lunch for Intermediate and Middle School students; no charging for High School students.

All students account balances are held in the system from year to year and school to school. Refunds of more than $1.00 are mailed to students graduating or leaving the district. You may contact our office for a refund or to discuss a refund for other reasons. Please log on to to make payments on line and check the current account balance. You will need their student ID number, which you can get from the school secretary or our office.

Please complete a meal application to see if your child qualifies for the Free and Reduced Meal Program. A new application must be completed and turned into your child's school to continue meal benefits from the previous year. If your child was approved for free or reduced meals at the end of last year they will expire on September 25, 2013. The free and reduced applications for the SY 2013-2014 are available at the following links, in English and Spanish.

Both Chartwells and The City of St. Charles School District are dedicated to providing quality nutritious meals that students will enjoy and choose to eat. We hope you will encourage your students to try new fruits and vegetables and that you will join us for a meal at school to see the changes for yourself.
