Do you think reading
and writing are important to our quality of life?
Do you enjoy the company of children?
Are you interested in sharing your love of reading with
a child who may be a reluctant reader?
Are you able to share one hour a week with a child to be
a tutor, mentor, and friend?
If your answer is "yes", please consider being a tutor
to a young child in our schools who needs help
developing reading and language skills. Through the
OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program, volunteers,
schools and OASIS work together to help young children
build reading skills and positive attitudes toward
learning.
Volunteers work one-on-one with the child, during the
school day, as a tutor, mentor and friend. With this
individual attention, the volunteers are able to build
the child's self-esteem and positive attitudes toward
learning while strengthening reading and language
skills.
Tutors receive 12 hour of initial training and
continuing support through regular tutor meetings where
they can share experiences, solve problems, and build
friendships.
OASIS tutoring opportunities are available in all of our
elementary schools. Tutors are matched with students in
grades K - 3. Tutor training is available twice each
year; see dates below. Tutors are required to complete
training before being placed in the schools.
