SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving a quarter-million high school and college students and professional members who are enrolled in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations. More than 1,000 corporations, trade associations and labor unions actively support SkillsUSA on a national level through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities. Many more work directly with state associations and local chapters.
SkillsUSA’s mission is to help its members become world-class workers and responsible American citizens. It complements technical skills training by providing quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities. Founded in 1965, SkillsUSA has developed nearly 8 million workers through active partnerships between employers and educators.
The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase activity of the SkillsUSA organization where more than 4,100 students compete in 73 occupational and leadership skill areas. This annual event begins with contests in classrooms. Winners advance through district or regional events, to state competition. Only the best make it to the national event. Students benefit no matter how they place in their contests. They test their skills, make job contacts, and have a chance for recognition. State and national winners receive gold, silver and bronze medallions, scholarships, tools and other awards. The national SkillsUSA Championships are considered the largest single-day of corporate volunteerism in America.
